Science fun at Horizon Community College

We took part in some science workshops at Horizon where we had to imagine we were stranded on a desert island and we had to decide what we would need to survive.

Firstly we looked at different ways of making fire. We rubbed sticks together, used wire wool and batteries and went outside to use a magnifying glass to set paper alight. Which was the best method?

Next we investigated making waterproof shelters. Can you remember why we poured 200ml of water on every shelter?

Finally we looked at which chemical would make the best flare by putting a a small amount of the chemical on a wooden stick and putting it in the flame of the Bunsen burner. We loved doing this.

Mad Scientist Workshop

What a brilliant morning we had with Nigel from Imagination games and his Mad Scientist workshop.

Nigel set each group a task such as “Take over the world”, “Raise the dead” and “Breathe under water”.

Their groups were then given some items  which included coffins, chocolate, bowl of water, milk, karaoke machine, bootleg media and pencils.

The group then assigned each person a role from managing director, financial director, PR manager, creative designer and sales manager. Between them they had to buy and sell items, come up with a company name and logo, create a machine and produce a marketing campaign.

We had to listen very hard for special offers, marketing opportunities and business advice. We had to budget carefully and use our money wisely.

The winning team was the one which made the most profit.  Well done CLAAN and your machine to help people travel to the centre of the earth.

Cracking contraptions (part 3)

We have been drafting our explanation texts this morning. They looked great but the proof is in the reading. Did you remember to include: time connectives, causal connectives, action verbs, paragraphs and sub-headings, technical vocabulary and a glossary and labelled diagrams?

Should polar bears be allowed into the town of Churchill?

The town of Churchill in Canada  has been built directly on an ancient migration route used by polar bears. Every year in the autumn, polar bears start their journey to reach winter hunting grounds out on the sea ice and have to cross the centre of town. Polar bears are very dangerous animals and have been known to hunt and kill humans, but as they are endangered, they cannot be killed.

Should polar bears be allowed to continue to go through Churchill? What do you think?
